Slime’s Top 5 Tire Safety Tips

May 13th, 2019

Next week, May 20-27th, is National Tire Safety Week. While maybe not the most exciting of national holidays (it’s no National Donut Day), we here at Slime understand the importance of maintaining your tires. After all, they are the only thing separating you from the road.

After 30 years of creating reliable products for tires, we have learned a thing or two about what tires need. Here are our top 5 tips to give your tires the TLC that they deserve. They may seem like common recommendations, but you would be surprised how many people do not properly maintain their tires. No more flats!

Tip No. 1: Check Your Tire Pressure Monthly

Tire Safety Week Tip #1

Your tires naturally lose a minimum of 1 psi every month. Over time, this air loss results in two problems: poor tire handling and wasted fuel. Don’t wait for your TPMS light to come on! Slime recommends that you check your tire pressure monthly and top off with air if needed. Your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure can be found on your driver-side door jamb placard or in your owner’s manual. Save your tires and save fuel with a quick monthly tire pressure adjustment.

Tire Safety Week Tip #2

Tip No. 2: Measure Your Tire Tread Depth Monthly

Reduced tire tread can mean poor tire handling and braking, not to mention an increased risk of a blowout. Slime recommends using a tire depth gauge, or the old tried-and-true penny test (or quarter test if you have larger tires) to ensure that you have enough rubber hitting the road. This quick visual inspection offers big returns when it comes to tire safety.

Tire Safety Week Tip #3

Tip No 3: Check Your Tire Pressure When Your Tires are Cool

Hot tires (tires that have been driven recently) will give an inaccurate tire pressure reading. To get an accurate picture of your tire pressure, Slime recommends that you check your tire pressure when your tires are cool. Tires are considered cold when the vehicle has been parked for three hours or more (We like to check our tire pressure in the morning, before we start up the car for the day).

Tire Safety Week Tip #4

Tip No. 4: Carry Tire Repair Sealant or a Flat Tire Repair Kit

Even with the most properly maintained tires, flats can happen at any time, so be prepared! In a flat tire emergency, chances are your spare tire is underinflated, cracked or flat. Tire repair sealants and flat tire repair kits are the safest and quickest way to get back on the road in a flat tire emergency. Store one compactly in your trunk so you never get stuck with a flat.

Tire Safety Week Tip #5Tip No. 5: Make Sure Your Tires Have Valve Caps

Though they may be small, tire valve caps play an important role in tire safety. Valve caps prevent damage to your valve stem, as well as prevent dirt from entering your valve. They also protect against air loss, so be sure to replace any leaking or cracked valve caps. Feeling fancy? Color coordinate your valve caps, or find valve caps that add a little bling to your tires!

No more flats!

These are great tips. I also apply these tips on my 4wheeler tires. Better to check the condition of all the tires to ensure the safety on the road. It\'s a hassle to get a flat tire, especially during long drives.
